Grand Canyon Skywalk - Las Vegas

It is one of the great natural wonders of the world -- and it will soon to be joined by an engineering marvel.

Step out onto the new Skywalk, and only a few sheets of glass will stand between you and a 15-second free-fall to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Set to open late this year, this fantastic horseshoe-shaped footbridge will jut 65 feet from the cliff edge out over the Grand Canyon and suspend 4000 feet above the canyon floor, a height more than twice that of the world's tallest skyscraper.

But the bridge has been engineered to withstand 100-mile per hour winds, magnitude 8 earthquakes -- and hold the weight of 71-jumbo jetliners.

The glass bridge -- officially called the canyon skywalk -- has been under construction for quite some time on the west rim of the grand canyon.

It's being built on Hualapai tribal lands -- and the tribe hopes it will become one of the biggest attractions in the southwest.
